His outstanding performances earned him the Rookie Of The Month for August. The 22-year-old Nigerian has been firing on all cylinders, helping the Xabi Alonso’s side to remain a force to reckon with in the Bundesliga.
Matthäus was surprised that such a talent like Boniface played in the Belgian Pro League, without being noticed by a German club. He allayed, that most clubs in the Bundesliga may have opted out of a move due to the fact Boniface has been seriously injured(ruptured anterior cruciate ligament) before.
What Matthäus said about Victor Boniface
“On the contrary: it was incomprehensible to me that he played in Belgium for so long and no German club noticed him,” the 62-year-old Ballon d’Or winner wrote in his Sky column.
“Congratulations to Leverkusen — for the other scouting departments in the Bundesliga I say: 17 times the grade 5 that they didn’t bring this player from Belgium for this amount,” the German legend continued.
Recall, Boniface was signed by Bayer 04 Leverkusen for a paltry sum of €20.5m.
“Perhaps some clubs had concerns because he had already torn his cruciate ligaments twice.”
Praising the former Royale Union Saint Gilloise forward, Matthäus vowed to walk all the way from Germany to Belgium to get him.
