A look into their goal contributions for their various clubs shows they’ve both contribute four times. Also, both players were in action for various countries in the last FIFA international break; a sign of their top form.
Awoniyi is a matter of fact, has scored in his last seven English Premier League outings.
Reacting to the outcome of the EPL POTM, NPFLUpdates in-house analyst Mr Best gave two reasons why he believed Taiwo Awoniyi couldn’t win the covetous prize.
Taiwo Awoniyi miss out on EPL POTM for August 2023
First, Best opined that James must have gotten the highest number of votes. “I mean it’s the vote that counts. Without the votes, no winner would’ve emerged; the idea of whether there was voting or not is out. Maddison must have pulled the highest number of votes; hence he won,” Mr. Best said.
Secondly, the seasoned analyst, argued that Maddison is a midfielder, and contributes more to his team than Awoniyi.
“Maddison is a midfielder, and you can just overlook the function of the midfield. Without a proper midfield, no team will progress; and Maddison is dual in function. Both as a midfielder and as an attacker (sometimes).
Meanwhile football fans are already giving the options on social media. Many have argued that individual performance is not enough for a player to win the POTM.
“Maddison deserves it more. He has been central to Tottenham’s fine start. Without him I doubt Spurs would have done so well.
If it was about goals Bryan Mbuemo would have won it, because he scored more than all the other nominees,” Facebook user Francis Etim said.
Njoagwu Moses said, “Awoniyi is my Nigerian brother but his goals and assist where did it position his club. But check where Tottenham Hotspur is in the table. Maddison contributions is one of the major factor for that.”
In addition, Joseph Okezie argued that ability of Maddison to adapt to changes in his new environment might have been a factor.

“Maddison went to a new club from a relegated Leicester City and adapted immediately, and he is a midfielder so these are things put into consideration,” he retorted.
