Osimhen is expected to lead the Super Eagles of Nigeria attack when they clash against their closest neighbors the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon on Saturday.
Nigeria progressed to the 2023 AFCON knockout stages on Thursday after beating Guinea-Bissau.
But so far in the tournament, Nigeria talisman Victor Osimhen isn’t at his full potential, scoring just one goal in three games. And that form has left many supporters puzzled as to why the bullish striker who was initially tipped to become the tournament’s top scorer is not converting chances.
José Peseiro upbeat Osimhen can end his goal-drought against Cameroon
However, coach José Peseiro has stepped in defense of his star man; and despite admitting that Osimhen missed some goal-scoring chances stated that the goals will come against Cameroon.
“For our next match, Osimhen will score; he’s important for the team. He’s the top scorer, but this is a different tournament and tough competition,” the former Sporting CP manager was quoted by Soccernet Nigeria.

“He deserves to reach the top position because against Equatorial Guinea, he created so many chances and he scored. Did Equatorial Guinea beat us? No, we shared the point, and I know we will beat them next time because it’s not easy in this competition,” remarked Peseiro.
Nigeria will hope to win the 34th edition of the Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON); and take its tally to four. The Green and White Eagles last tasted African glory in 2013, after defeating Burkina Faso in the finals.
