The hopes of Super Eagles supporters who wants the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to go all out and sign Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho will likely hit the rocks; npflupdates.com reports.
Mourinho who last managed the reigning UEFA Europa Conference League champions AS Roma, is presently without any contract. And the Super Eagles who’s in search of a fourth AFCON title, and a world cup qualification can steer it’s ship towards the former Inter Milan manager.
Recall, José Peseiro publicly announced he’s stepping aside from his duties as the Super Eagles manager last Friday.
According to the former Sporting CP manager, it was a pride and honour to have worked with the Nigeria Football Federation.
“Yesterday, we concluded our contract with the NFF. It was a pride and honor to coach the Super Eagles. It has been 22 months of immense dedication, sacrifice, emotion, and enormous enthusiasm. We feel a sense of fulfillment.
“Guys, we are thankful; it has been a privilege to be part of this family. We will miss you, but we will always be there for you, no matter where you are. A big hug to all of you,” Peseiro posted on his X handle.
And it seems the former Saudi Arabia national team coach has a lot of offers more lucrative than what the NFF presented.

“I told everyone to come back at the end of the month. What is certain is that I want to continue coaching and I need to choose wisely.
“At this moment, I repeat, all options remain possible. I received a lot of options, and a lot of contacts from national teams or clubs.
“I would say 5, 6 or 7, he revealed, without revealing their identity,” he said.
Meanwhile, speculations spread that the NFF had its Technical Director Austin Egueavoen take over the three-time African champions on interim basis.
Why NFF may not approach José Mourinho For Super Eagles Role
Reacting, NPFLUpdates in-house analyst Mr Best, stated some of the reasons why he thinks the NFF cannot afford Mourinho.
According to the renowned football head, Mourinho can take the national team to a greater height, but it will come with a sacrifice which the NFF may not live up to.
Financial status of the NFF at the moment cannot afford Mourinho
Several reports in the Nigerian media pointed out the financial crisis facing the football governing body. It’s not new that the financial crisis was what led to the NFF reducing the salary of José Peseiro; and also removing all assistant coaches from payroll.
“To approach Mourinho with a $50,000 salary offer will look disgraceful. I don’t think he can take any team with such offer serious, judging by his antecedents and class in the job,” Mr Best said Saturday morning.
According to Wikipedia, José Mourinho is regarded as one of the greatest football managers of all time.
