Ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup Of Nations AFCON, qualifier against Libya, Siasia insists Iwobi isn’t the perfect player for the No.10 position; npflupdates.com reports.
Iwobi since his debut for the Super Eagles has been utilised in the playmaking position by several coaches.
Players like Jay Jay Okocha and Mikel Obi has played in the Super Eagles revered no.10 position; Siasia insists there’s no perfect replacement for Okocha since his retirement.
According to the former international, Mikel though with many potentials, failed to live up to expectations during his reign in the team; and now Iwobi is also not living up to expectations.
What Siasia said about Iwobi and Super Eagles playmaking position
“Nigeria(Super Eagles ) is yet to find a suitable replacement for Okocha since he quit international football in 2006,” Siasia noted.
“John Obi Mikel was expected to take up the role, but failed to live up to expectations. Similarly, Alex Iwobi has been used in the number 10 role, but he’s not good enough.”
The former Flying Eagles gaffer acknowledged Iwobi’s strengths as a player; however, he insisted the Fulham player lacks the creativity required to excel in the playmaking position.
“Iwobi cannot play that position. He’s a good player, but he’s not doing as much as he’s supposed to as an offensive player.”
The former coach stressed the need for a midfielder who can provide decisive passes and as well score goals.
“We don’t have an offensive midfield player that can give the last pass to the strikers. We have great strikers, but we need someone that is missing.”
“We need someone like Jay-Jay Okocha, but it has to be somebody that can score more than he did.”
