Nottingham Forest boss, Steve Cooper, while confirming the news of Awoniyi’s unavailability said the striker will be out for “months,”, thus effectively ruling him out of the African showpiece that starts in January 2024 in Ivory Coast.
Cooper talks about Taiwo Awoniyi and his injury setback
“We’ll definitely see him again this season, but it’s groin surgery so it will take a little while,” Cooper said in a pre-match press conference as quoted by Daily Post Nigeria.
“It’s bad news on Taiwo, he’s had to have surgery and he is going to be out for months,”
“We’ll support him and try to get him back as quick and as fit as he can be, but it’s a really unfortunate situation and a blow for him.”
Speaking further, Cooper said Awoniyi who has scored four goals this season for Forest is an important player for the team.
“He’s become an important player for us with the goals he’s scored. He’s such a good guy and a good professional who is desperate to do well, so to get an injury like this is harsh on him.
“We’ve got to support him through the process of coming back stronger,” Cooper concluded saying.
Two things to takeaway from the recent injury of Taiwo Awoniyi are the following:
First, the Awoniyi who led Super Eagles attack at the last edition of the African Cup Of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon will not be available for the next edition.

Secondly, the former Golden Eaglets player may not be able to achieve the goal-target he always give himself at the beginning of every season.
In another story, the Super Eagles for the AFCON are seeded in the same Group A as the host nation Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau.
