Osimhen Is A “True Striker” Ex Roma And Italian Legend Said After Barcelona UCL R16 Performance

Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen scored his sixth consecutive goal at the Estadio Diego Armando Maradona last night when Napoli exchanged tackles with FC Barcelona; npflupdates.com reports.

Osimhen started his first ever Napoli game since after the 2023 Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Cote d’Ivoire. At the AFCON, the 25-year-old endured a 6-match goal drought, scoring once and helping the Super Eagles of Nigeria finish with a silver medal.

On Wednesday the Catalans took the lead through a Robert Lewandowski’s 60th-minute strike heading, after a barren first half.

And with just 15 minutes to the stoppage time, Osimhen equalised from a quality finish.

The Nigeria international was under the watchful attention of Barcelona defender Iñigo Martínez when Cameroonian playmaker André-Frank Zambo Anguissa sent him a simple pass.

The former VFL Wolfsburg forward, held his ground, shrugged off competition and shielded his marker to receive the ball, and almost immediately turned towards goal, all with one swift movement and buried the ball into Barcelona’s net.

Reacting to the doggedness of the forward, Italian football legend, Luca Toni described the Nigerian as a “True striker”.

“Osimhen withstood the defender’s impact, protected the ball, turned well and then in front of the goal the goalkeeper was wrong-footed.

“A goal from a true striker.

“Napoli played a great match; they had a lot to lose, but instead, they emerged from Barcelona’s dominance and demonstrated that they can scare Barcelona. They must continue on this path; this team was born to play the 4-3-3,” the former FC Bayern Munich forward was quoted by Soccernet Nigeria.

Osimhen and his Napoli teammates will travel to the Estadio Camp Nou for the return leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 fixture in few weeks time.
