The Super Falcons of Nigeria on Friday(today) were held to a goalless draw by neighbors the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon during a 2024 Summer Olympics qualifier in Douala; npflupdates.com reports.
Super Falcons failed to defeat the Lionesses in Douala, but will hope to return to winning ways during the reverse fixture on Monday.
Observations from Super Falcons clash with Indomitable Lionesses
Three important things was observed during the mouthwatering fixture. They include the following:
(1) The officiating of the fixture was poor
Center-field official, Shamirah Nabadda who was in charge of the game, made a couple of mistakes and it will be an evening to forget for her. The 32-year-old made a lot of questionable decisions, including disallowing a 54th minute goal by Juventus Midfielder Jennifer Echegini.
The referee disallowed the goal for offside, but a clearer view to circumstances surrounding the goal, it was discovered that the playmaker was onside, as against the offside call.
2. The Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon were very physical
The Super Falcons dominated a better part of the second period, and created quite a number of chances. But their build-up which mostly starts from the back didn’t get going and they resorted to playing the ball long.
However, the Indomitable Lionesses were equal to the task, very good in the air as well on the ground duel. More shocking, they constantly out-muscled the Nigerian players.
Finally; American coach Randy Waldrum enjoyed his first game as Super Falcons manager since the 2023 FIFA women’s World Cup tournament in Australia and New Zealand.
Also, 20-year-old midfielder, Deborah Abiodun was outstanding against the Cameroonians. Always maintaining her positions and making the opposition players feel uncomfortable.
