Oshoala made the confirmation during a post-match interview on Thursday morning. According to the forward, she’s happy to have helped the team win its first game at the 2023 FIFA women’s World Cup.

On Thursday at the Suncorp stadium, the Super Falcons came from behind to win the Matildas.

Nigeria were behind in the 46th minute when the Australians capitalized on an open space in the box to slot past Chiamaka Nnadozie. But their celebration was caught short, after winger Uchenna Kanu scored an equaliser five minutes later. Interestingly, the build-up to the Super Falcons goal was orchestrated by Rasheedat Ajibade.

It was a one-all stalemate at half-time, with the Super Falcons still being considered as the underdogs by fans and pundits. But then, coach Randy Waldrum brought in some fresh legs. And with the introduction of Asisat Oshoala, the Nigeria became more ferocious in the attack, piling pressure on the host.

And the pressure from Nigeria culminated into a corner-kick leading to Nigeria’s second goal. Defender Osinachi Ohale rose so high to head home last Australian goalkeeper despite opponent’s raised boot. And then in the 72nd minute, Oshoala will capitalize on a miscommunication by Australian defender and goalie to score. Hence extending Nigeria’s lead, and ensuring a comfortable win for the Super Falcons.
