Asisat Oshoala heaps praises on Nigeria after Australia win

Super Falcons forward Asisat Oshoala is now Nigeria’s first player to score at three different FIFA world cup tournaments; she’s trailed by Ahmed Musa who’s scored on two outings.

Asisat Oshoala on Thursday morning helped the Super Falcons beat world cup co-host Australia at the Suncorp stadium. And interestingly, she started from the bench.

The Super Falcons went behind in the 46th minute when the Australians capitalized on an open space in the box. But their celebration was caught short after winger Uchenna Kanu scored an equaliser. Interestingly, the build-up to the Super Falcons goal was orchestrated by Rasheedat Ajibade.

It was a one-all stalemate at half-time, with the Super Falcons still being considered as the underdogs by fans and pundits. But then, coach Randy Waldrum brought in some fresh legs. With the introduction of Asisat Oshoala, the Super Falcons piled pressure on the host.

And the pressure from Nigeria culminated into a corner-kick leading to Nigeria’s second goal. Defender Osinachi Ohale rose so high to head home despite opponent’s raised boot.

And shortly after, in the 72nd minute, Oshoala capitalized on a mistake by the Matilda’s defender and Goalkeeper to score the third. Interestingly, the goal was ensured she had scored in three consecutive FIFA world cup tournament.

The Barcelona’s Feminine forward, has scored in the 2015, 2019 and 2023 FIFA women’s World Cup editions. She’s the first ever player to achieve that feat. And has overtaken Super Eagles Captain Ahmed Musa who has scored at two world cups.

Ahmed Musa has scored at the 2014 and 2018 FIFA men’s world cup tournaments. He scored a brace against Argentina in a group stage at the 2014 edition. And went on to replicate such feat against Iceland at the 2018 edition.

Super Falcons are currently top of their group with four points from two games. And they will take their next and final group game against Republic of Ireland next week.
