Super Falcons progress to the next round of WAFCON qualifier, NFF makes announcement

Super Falcons Captain, Onome Ebi ahead of the 2023 FIFA women’s World Cup has opened up on her inclusion into the national team.

Ebi, 40, is the oldest African player ever to make an appearance at any FIFA organised competition. She is the only African footballer to make a 6th consecutive FIFA women’s World Cup appearances since her debut in 2002.

Ebi will make history when she finally leads the Super Falcons from the dug out against Canada on Friday. And when it’s a thing of joy and excitement for the lucrative defender, many Nigerians have criticized her inclusion.

According to fans, the defender is old enough and should have retired from active football. Because she can’t cope with the kind of pace and tactics needed in modern football, where players play space games.

What was said about Super Falcons Captain ahead of FIFA World Cup

“Ebi is a hero, and nobody is taking that away from her. But for me, she’s not supposed to be in the national team as an active player. Maybe as an assistant coach, but to play in world’s biggest stage, I don’t think she can cope,” Mr Best said.

“However, since she has made the cut, that means she still has something serious to offer. And I believe the coach has his reasons for handing such opportunity. Of course, her experience will be utilized at the back.”

And with just few days ago, the Super Falcons Captain has opened up on how she got invited and shortlisted.

According to her, it just hardwork, discipline, consistency and grace of God that kept her going.

“6th(FIFA women’s World Cup) coming through in 4 days. Let’s do this together. Don’t fight or question what hardwork, dedication, discipline, consistency and grace of God can make you achieve,” she said.

“Luck or politics, as most people say can never get you this far in sports. Don’t allow anyone deceive you.”
