Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro, says the inability of his strikers to convert their chances is the main reason the team drew with Saudi Arabia npflupdates.com reports.

Jose Peseiro was in charge when the Super Eagles were held to a 2-2 draw by Saudi Arabia in Portimao last Friday. And that’s Nigeria’s first match since after knowing it’s 2023 AFCON group opponents after the draw on Thursday night.

Saudi Arabia went into the game as the underdogs losing four consecutive matches; but where however able to salvage a draw against the three-time African champions.

Goals from Al-Faraj and Mohammed Kanno ensured the Asian giants ended it’s losing streak.

Speaking after the game, the former Sporting CP gaffer, confessed it’s team needs to improve it’s ‘finishing’. Forwards, Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze were presented with a clear goal-scoring opportunities in the first-half, but failed to convert, as the period ended in a stalemate.

“We need to improve on our finishing,” Peseiro said in his post-match interview.

“I think we played very well in the first half and could have scored about three to five goals and in the second half as well. We created more chances in the second half but we need the killer instinct in this squad but I’m happy with the result.”

Speaking further, Peseiro, defended goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho who’s mistake resulted in Saudi Arabia’s first goal. According to the 56-year-old, it was his responsibility that Uzoho made some mistakes.

“When I arrived here, I remember I was told to change the goalkeeper. I spoke with all of them, No one feels comfortable because everybody attacked them,” he said.

“I like our players, when they make mistakes it is my responsibility.

“The goalkeepers never play free or calm because of the people. I don’t know why they attack the goalkeepers every time.”

He added, “Why don’t they attack the strikers when they lose the ball or miss a goal, why?

“They could make mistakes, it is my responsibility. Next time I need to train him (Uzoho) better.”
