Osimhen Sends New Message To Emmanuel Amunike After 2023 CAF Awards

Super Eagles forward Victor James Osimhen becomes the first Nigerian player to win the CAF Player Of The Year (POTY) award in over two decades npflupdates.com reports.

Osimhen saw off competitions from Egyptian forward Mohammed Salah and Morocco defender Achraf Hakimi to win the covetous prize.

At the presentation of the award Osimhen had acknowledged his coach when he was with the Golden Eaglets (U-17) of Nigeria. The 26-year-old under the tutelage of Emmanuel Amunike won the 2015 FIFA U-17 world cup tournament with Nigeria; finishing the tournament as the highest goalcorer with ten goals.

In what looked like a twist of event, Amunike who nurtured and provided Osimhen with the opportunity of becoming a professional chose Mohammed Salah to win the POTY ahead of the Nigerian.

The Super Eagles legend made the declaration when he was asked by CAF officials who he thought would win the POTY award.

“Salah,” Amunike said.

But speaking after receiving the award, the Napoli forward acknowledged Amunike, stressing that without him, he wouldn’t have gotten to the CAF.

“I want to appreciate Emmanuel Amunike, without him, I will not be here,” Osimhen said.

On his role model, whom he looked up to while growing up in the streets of Lagos. The 26-year-old appreciated Didier Drogba.

“I appreciate my role model, Didier Drogba,” he added.

In another story, Super Falcons Chiamaka Nnadozie and Asisat Oshoala both won CAF Best Goalkeeper and Player Of The Year (POTY) awards of the female category respectively.
