Peseiro Retains Position As Super Eagles’ Head Coach

Indigenous coaches are not tactical like foreign counterparts

Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro will retain his position until after the upcoming AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast.

NPFLUpdates.com gathered the tactician who’s contract will expire on 30 June 2023, will remain as the Super Eagles’ coach.

Peseiro took charge of the Super Eagles shortly after the resignation of Augustine Egueavoen after the AFCON in Cameroon.

Egueavoen took charge of the Super Eagles’ team that traveled to Cameroon for the 2021 AFCON tournament. And the former Super Eagles defender, helped the team reach a Knockout phase. But were eventually eliminated by a depleted Tunisian team in the Round of 16.

Also, Egueavoen, was in charge when the national team failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA world cup in Qatar. And that according to speculations was the reason why he stepped aside from the head coach position.

José Peseiro since becoming the Super Eagles coach has featured in ten games, losing six and winning four. And under his watch as coach, the three-time African champions witnessed its worst run since inception. Losing four consecutive matches, and one being an embarrassing 4-0 thrashing by a world cup bound Portugal in Lisbon.

Also, a 1-0 defeat by Guinea-Bissau at the Moshood Abiola stadium in Abuja during an AFCON qualifier fixture. However, he redeemed the defeat by defeating Guinea-Bissau in Bissau during a reverse fixture.

Last week, the Nigeria Football Federation NFF, led by Ibrahim Musa Gusau had left the fate of the gaffer in the hands of fans and analyst. But then, the idea of fans deciding the fate of a national team coach was heavily criticised.

Recent reports, confirmed that the former Sporting CP coach will remain as the coach as endorsed by the NFF. But it wil come with a task of helping the team reach a semi-final spot at the AFCON in Ivory Coast.

Nigerians have welcomed the idea, at least he will have enough time to organise the team and harness the talents therein.
