Taiwo Awoniyi Is More Yekini Than Osimhen – Baba

Nottingham Forest's Taiwo Awoniyi misses out on EPL POTM for August 2023.

Super Eagles legend, Celestine Babayaro in his opinion has said, forward Taiwo Awoniyi is of a closer resemblance with late Rashidi Yekini in terms of abilities.

Babayaro stated this during an interview with Owngoal Nigeria last weekend. Taiwo Awoniyi is in the form of his life at Nottingham forest, scoring five goals in his last three appearances.

His recent strike, dented the title race of English Premier League side Arsenal. And of course, handed Manchester City it’s third consecutive league title.

But, the most interesting part of the 25-year-old’s strike, is the fact that he helped his team escape relegation.

Also, Awoniyi, was the striker to score Forest’s first ever EPL goal in more than two decades. Fans of Forest are already celebrating the Nigerian.

Reacting to the recent form of the player, and his style of play, Babayaro admitted he’s a good striker.

And according to the Olympic Gold medalist, just like Yekini, Awoniyi is always quick in opponent’s box. And also, he talked about, the player’s involvement when in striking position within opponent’s goal.

“When I watch him play, it’s like Yekini in his prime,” Babayaro said.

“The way he comes alive in the box. And fights for every ball.”

“He uses his body very well and don’t need to get much involved before scoring. He is to me more like Yekini than Osimhen. Their style is so similar,” he added.

Meanwhile, victor Osimhen is the current Serie A top goalcorer with 23 goals this season. Few weeks ago, the 24-year-old helped Napoli win its first Scudetto title in more than three decades.

Top European clubs are jostling for the services of the Nigerian who’s charged on breaking the record of most goals scored for Nigeria. And that’s a record previously held by the legend, Rashidi Yekini.
