Nigeria played six AFCON matches unbeaten, but shockingly lost to the superior power of the Akwaba Elephants last Sunday.
Captain William Troost-Ekong gave the Green and White colours the lead shortly after the first cooling break. At half-time, Nigeria was leading the host nation, and were on the verge of achieving a fourth title before Midfielder Frank Kessie headed home a Simon Adingra set-piece.
With less than twenty minutes remaining on the clock, Borussia Dortmund’s forward Sebastian Haller, completed the Ivorian comebacks, when he slotted into the back of Nwabali Stanley’s net a cross from Adingra.
The host nation held their positions for the remainder of the minutes, and were crowned the new champions of Africa.
Nwabali apologise to Super Eagles supporters
Reacting to the loss, Nwabali who kept four cleansheets in the tournament, took his Instagram story to tender an unreserved apology to fans.
According to the Chippa United goalkeeper, it was a “frustrating” way to end the campaign.
