AFCON 23: Super Eagles Supporters Want Iwobi Out Of The National Team Cites ‘Poor’ Performances

The Super Eagles of Nigeria has failed in its bid to win a fourth Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) title and fans are not happy with midfielder Alex Iwobi; npflupdates.com reports.

Nigeria lost 1-2 to the Akwaba Elephants of Ivory Coast at the prestigious Alassane Ouattara stadium Abidjan, on Sunday night.

Iwobi in action for Nigeria

The three-time African champions, were close to winning a fourth title after captain William Troost-Ekong headed home few minutes to the end of the first period.

The host nation would Equalize through a Franck Kessie’s header. The Elephants completed their comeback, when Borussia Dortmund’s forward Sebastian Haller tucked in  a cross from the left hand side of the pitch.

Angered by the performances of the national team, supporters of the national team criticised the performances of Alex Iwobi, Victor Osimhen and Samuel Chukwueze.

According to the fans, Iwobi was poor in the midfield, and lacked the agility attributed to his cousin Austin Jay Jay Okocha.

What fans said about Alex Iwobi

The angry supporters took to various social media platforms to call for the exclusion of the former Arsenal man from the national team.

“He has never had his best form since the beginning of the tournament. He doesn’t even play like a premier league player. Iwobi should never be invited to the team. No accurate pass, looses the ball, no tackling. What was his role in the tournament,” Facebook Ken Henry.

“The question is why won’t he be at his best at a Final game????? Have said it several times and I’Il keep saying it again that if Nigeria ever wanna vin a major trophy, they should bring back the days of grassroots players….those are the real hungry Eagles that are ready to win,” Jubril Adewale posted on the social media platform.

“No single player(including Iwobi) should undergo any kind of abuse! The technical team are to blame, the whole set up was awful from the start, No change of tactics, Appeared they were instructed to defend throughout the game’s normal time and settle for penalties. The coaches are to blame!,” Andrew John posted in defense of the former Everton FC midfielder.
